SAVANNAH - Charles Ellis Waring, Jr., died peacefully on October 26, 2009. He was born September 11, 1926 in Savannah, Georgia, and was the son of Charles Ellis Waring and Elizabeth Stewart Waring.
Mr. Waring attended Charles Ellis School and graduated from The Solbury School in New Hope, Pennsylvania. He immediately entered the Navy which sent him to the University of Mississippi from which he graduated. From there he went to flight school in Pensacola, Florida. Upon graduation as an ensign and Navy pilot, he served on many aircraft carriers all over the world.
During the Korean War period, he served in Task Force 77 and flew from the carriers USS Midway, USS Philippine Sea, USS Valley Forge and USS Boxer. In 1955 he was aboard the USS Midway for an around-the-world cruise. He flew from the USS Coral Sea and the USS Shangri-La. In the 1960's, he served aboard and flew from the USS Saratoga in the Mediterranean Sea and also flew in the Viet Nam War. Mr. Waring retired as a Lt. Commander from the Navy after 30 years service.
Mr. Waring was always a man of the sea. He spent his youth in the rivers and creeks around Isle of Hope. After retirement, he lived in Florida where he enjoyed fishing and boating with his many friends.
Mr. Waring is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Waring Barrow; his niece, Elizabeth Barrow and her husband M. Earl Hagan, Jr., of New York City; and nephews, David Crenshaw Barrow III and his wife Elaine H. Barrow, and Charles Waring Barrow and his wife Janet R. Barrow, of Savannah.
The family would like to express their special thanks to the staff of the Oaks at the Marshes of Skidaway for their very kind and excellent care of Mr. Waring.
A memorial service will be held at 11am on Friday, October 30, in the chapel of St. John's Church at 1 West Macon Street for family and friends of Commander Waring. According to Commander Waring's wishes, his family and clergy will spread his ashes in Wassaw Sound at a later date in a private family service, returning him to the sea that he loved, served on, and enjoyed so much.

I will always remember Charlie for the friend and gentleman he was. He opened his home to me on several occasions, and I hada the privilege to work with him on several boats over the years in Florida and the Bahamas. He taught me a lot about seamanship and friendship.
